Active Release Technique
Active Release Technique (ART) is a therapy used to break up adhesions, which are dense collections of scar tissue that form when muscles and connective tissues are injured. The scar tissue binds between the muscles and limits flexibility, causing pain, weakness, numbness, tingling, and stiffness in muscles and joints.
During an ART session, the DOC physical therapist will feel the area and identify and isolate the location of the scar tissue. The ART practitioner through manipulation and movement targets the affected area to break up the scar tissue and restore proper blood flow so the muscles, joints, and nerves can move freely again. ART can be used to treat inflammation, muscle strains, ligament and tendon injuries, joint pain, neck and back pain, and nerve pain.
